Honorable Mention Awakening Laurel K. Dodge Land’s end. Wedged at the water's edge, a skeleton. The tide skulks off or crawls back, a repentant Magdalene. The sun dies on the cross or resurrects. I stray from your hand to kneel in the sand. A test held up to the failing light as if it were flesh made holy. You shake the wafer, shush me for the death rattle. You pocket the relic for safe keeping. Years from now, you'll find it on a shelf, a dusty memento mori of us. You'll snap the host in half; five teeth will fall into your palm. It will mean nothing. We walk to the end of the beach hand in hand or your fists jammed deep in your pockets, my arms folded across my body. Waves wash my feet with tears. Years from now, I'll awaken at dawn or dusk, your flesh dissolved on my tongue, five doves pulsing through the blood- dark like nails.
